The silent art of Kintsugi

Life is all about making, breaking and repairing! Isn't it? Some of you might agree and most of you might disagree. We all have our share of life experiences that shape our philosophies, mindset and outlook. But, are you aware of a precious, and ancient Japanese art called- Kintsugi? If you do, you are a winner in life somewhere. If you don't, you may become one soon.

What is Kintsugi?

Kintsugi is a valuable ancient art of Japan that dates back to around 15th century. It practically means: 'putting together with gold'. It is not just an art form, but carries a profound meaning. In practical sense, it translates to the art of mending broken pieces of pottery with mostly gold, and sometimes silver or platinum. The process involves patching up broken pieces of pottery by using lacquer mixed or dusted with powdered form of gold, silver or platinum.

The Forgotten Art of Kintsugi: Hidden Meaning

The art of Kintsugi should not be confused with just an aesthetic concept. It sends out a deeper message in accepting one's imperfections and turning them into something even better than the original, while retaining its valuable history. It adds on more sparkle and shine to the original piece showing the world, how important it is to sometimes respect and honor the beauty of the old. Maybe that is why, there is a famous quote out there- 'Old is Gold'.

In today's fast paced world where 'replacing' is often considered easier than 'repairing', where 'throwing away' seems better than 'putting together', Kintsugi encourages us to pause and reflect on whether we are truly on the right path. It teaches you that there is always hidden beauty in the broken too. (#Brokenisbeautiful).

Kintsugi: Teachings & Application

The concept of Kintsugi is a broad one if you come to think of it and can be applied to almost every aspect of our lives. While you learn to prefer mending over breaking and throwing away, this rare art of Kintsugi lets you live in the moment while appreciating the beauty hidden in the many flaws of life. What does it really teach us?

  • Every crack has a different story

  • There is immense hidden beauty in the flaws

  • Each piece is different than the other

  • The past is sometimes worth glorifying

  • There is beauty even in the broken

  • Patching up is better than losing it forever

Kintsugi is actually a life skill that can be embraced in our daily lives. It makes you believe that embracing imperfections can lead to a more-than-perfect reality. It makes you trust in the process and makes you realise that patches are not always ugly and out of place. Imperfection can also lead to perfection!
